Using DataDerm™ to Seamlessly Report for MIPS

Dermatology World talks with John Albertini, MD, at The Skin Surgery Center in North Carolina and Chris DeGeorge, director of integration and practice operations at QualDerm Partners, about how DataDerm™ has helped ease the burden of MIPS reporting — and earn their practice a bonus.

DWW: How long have you been using DataDerm?

Chris DeGeorge: Two years.

DWW: What was the process for getting your practice set up with DataDerm, and how was your overall experience?

DeGeorge: We worked internally with our physician champions at the practice to determine which measures to report on. Based on provider feedback, we then worked with FIGmd to integrate DataDerm into our EHR system for data capture.

DWWHow many MIPS measures did you report through DataDerm and which ones?

DeGeorge: Last year, we reported 11 measures through DataDerm, which were: Melanoma: Overutilization of Imaging Studies in Melanoma; Melanoma: Continuity of Care – Recall System; Melanoma: Coordination of Care; Biopsy Follow-Up; Documentation of Current Medications in the Medical Record; Preventative Care and Screening, including Tobacco Use: Screening and Cessation; Tobacco Use and Help with Quitting Among Adolescents; BCC/SCC: Biopsy Reporting Time; Influenza, Pneumococcal, and Alcohol.

DWWCan you walk through the MIPS measure submission process? How long did it take?

DeGeorge: We used DataDerm to upload quality measures to CMS and submit interoperability measures via the MIPS website. Overall, the process took about two to three hours of work.

DWWHow did your practice fare with MIPS in 2017?

Dr. Albertini: We scored 100% and anticipate an incentive bonus payment as opposed to a neutral or penalty situation.

DWWTell me about your DataDerm dashboard — what data do you capture and why?

Dr. Albertini: Our IT team manages the relationship with DataDerm and monitors the process. We don’t utilize the DataDerm dashboard, but our practice has developed many internal clinical metrics and dashboards to help inform providers and drive compliance and quality improvement.

DWW: What do you like about DataDerm and why would you suggest other practices adopt?

DeGeorge: It easily integrated with our EHR system and made the submission process with CMS seamless.

DWW: How has DataDerm helped alleviate against burnout?

Dr. Albertini: Our QualDerm management team in general, and our IT team specifically, has relieved our providers from the administrative and regulatory burdens of compliance with MIPS through the successful interface with DataDerm. We have integrated data capture into our clinical workflows. Indirectly, I suspect we all feel less stress by not having to devote personal or professional time, energy, or attention to this task at the expense of patient care or work-life balance.
