QualDerm-affiliated Dermatopathologist also Inducted as President of American Society of Dermatopatology
BRENTWOOD, TN (November 22, 2019)
QualDerm Partners, a company that creates market-leading dermatology practice partnerships through affiliations and de novo development, announced that Omar P. Sangüeza, MD, earned the International Society of Dermatopathology’s (ISDP) prestigious Founders Award.
The ISDP membership includes approximately 700 dermatolopathologists from 5 continents. Founded in 1979, the society seeks to increase knowledge of the structure and function of the skin and of diseases of the skin by microscopy as well as to promote scientific exchanges among its members. The ISDP Founders Award was established to annually recognize a member who has made a significant contribution to the society and its mission. Dr. Sangüeza received the award at the society’s October 2019 meeting in Portugal.
“I am proud to be recognized for devoting my time and energy to the ISDP,” says Dr. Sangüeza. “Over the last several years, we’ve worked to ensure the society’s long-term stability so that we can continue to advance the important work dermatolopatholgists do around the world.”
Dr. Sangüeza is an internationally-renowned, board-certified dermatopathologist. He has served as both the President and Secretary/Treasurer of the ISDP. Dr. Sangüeza also previously served on the American Society of Dermatopathology’s Board of Directors and a two-year term as President of the International Committee for Dermatopathology.
Also in October, Dr. Sangüeza began his term as the newly-elected President of the American Society of Dermatopathology (ASDP). Since 1962, the ASDP mission has been to improve the quality of dematopathology and the treatment of skin diseases. Today, approximately 1,000 members are actively involved in the organization.
“Both the ISDP and the ASDP are very important to the practice of dermatopathology,” says Dr. Sangüeza. “There is significant benefit to collaborating and exchanging ideas with your professional peers. This improves our practices and the professionalism of everyone involved.”
In 2017, Dr. Sangüeza joined The Skin Surgery Center to provide dermatopathology services to each of the practice’s 17 locations as well as its future locations. Dr. Sangüeza also serves as a Professor and Director of Dermatopathology at Wake Forest University Medical Center. He directs the Fellowship program there and has trained more than 80 dermatopathology fellows from around the world. In 2014, Dr. Sangüeza was recognized with the Walter R. Nickel Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Dermatopathology. He frequently lectures worldwide, has authored more than 200 publications and has published several books. Dr. Sangüeza is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Dermatopathology.
“Dr. Sangüeza is an invaluable member of the QualDerm network,” says Bill Southwick, CEO of QualDerm Partners. “Throughout his career, he has provided leadership to promote the practice of dermatopathology around the world. His expertise and passion for the specialty benefits our affiliated physicians and the patients we treat.”
